What Led to the Overthrow
Catherine was planning to overthrow Peter because she thought that Peter was steering Russia in the wrong direction. He was making alliances with adversaries, like Prussia, and breaking historic alliances. The Prussian style drills and uniforms angered many military leaders. She saw that Peter was constantly out of St.Petersburg, leaving himself in a vulnerable position. He put the Imperial Guard in Denmark to fight, so Catherine saw the perfect opportunity to strike.
